Why We Celebrate All the Things!

11/15/2014 09:47:00 PM Posted by mommy2twincesses

Whether or not to “lie” to our little ones about the magical parts of childhood seem to be of much debate as of lately. And while I don’t usually touch any topic that can be seen as a “mommy war”, this one just won’t let me be.

I’ll take a firm stand here and let the cards fall where they may. I will make my girls’ childhood as magical as I possibly can, and though I enjoy it immensely, just for fun, I’ve realized there is a much deeper, more spiritual reason for my enthusiasm.

That reason is faith. Plain and simple. I believe it’s something that we’re born with and I refuse to stomp it out by forcing the lenses of adulthood on my children.

At birth, we cry, and take it in good faith that someone, namely our parents, will come to our aid.

As we age, we take it a bit further, and on wobbly legs, take those cherished first steps, in full faith that someone is there to catch us when we fall.

As maturity continues, our faith shifts forms, and we begin to create our own views of the world and everything in it, and as scary as it seems, most of those views stubbornly stick with us into adulthood. We’ll basically be “believers” or “skeptics”.

From a parent’s standpoint, that is hallowed ground that I pave. Whether or not to extend a practice of faith, and a belief in something beyond ourselves is essentially in my hands. That’s positively terrifying!

And while each parent has their own reasons for parenting the way they do, I feel compelled to share why I try to make believing in more so very important.

A subject like the Trinity is difficult at times for even adults to grasp. We practice in baby steps if you will, memorizing stories, scriptures, and simple prayers. With hopes of someday understanding the complexity of it all.

But on the other hand, faith itself, which is the absolute cornerstone of Christianity, is belief in the unseen, complete trust if you will, and knowing, that beyond a shadow of a doubt something we’ll never physically see on this side of Heaven is real.

If we practice taking steps, babbling words, and every other action under the sun, why should we not practice FAITH in terms understandable to children?

In my humble opinion, sharing the “magic” of Santa and elves, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and all the like, is sharing a practice of faith. It’s believing that though we can’t see something, it can still be very real. And after all, as a mother, I fully believe myself to be all of those roles! I AM their Santa, their Elf on the Shelf, their Tooth Fairy, and their Easter Bunny. Those things are not lies to me, they’re baby steps into faith. They’re a foundational belief in goodness, joy, and love.

Imagine this: you’re taught during your childhood to take things at face value. Believe in what you can see with your own eyes, in only what you can understand and prove to be true. We’ve just destroyed faith. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Matthew 18:3 also instructs us “become like little children” in order to inherit the kingdom. If we never allow our children to BE LITTLE CHILDREN, how will they ever become ADULTS who are capable of belief like a child?

I don’t know about you, but when I’m breathing life into my children’s imaginations and fueling their wildest dreams with “things unseen”, I FEEL like a child! My heart soars and pure joy fills my soul. Like Psalms 23:5 “my cup runneth over” in moments like these!

Now don’t misunderstand, I connect fun traditions like Santa and the Easter Bunny to our walk with Christ every chance I get! I do that so that we never underestimate the teachings of Deuteronomy 6:7-we talk about God and His goodness, when we sit at home and when we walk along the road, when we lie down and when we get up. I never allow the fun stuff to overshadow the REAL stuff and I firmly believe that putting our faith into action in terms understandable by children is the key to a deep, long lasting faith as an adult.

If we can’t allow the belief in something as wholesome as Santa, which they see portrayed in a positive light all over the world around them, how can we expect that they’ll ever fully accept the concept of salvation, which is almost hidden by most societies, tucked away in “special stores” and legally separated from state affairs, such as public schools?

Now I’m no Biblical scholar, no fine teacher of The Word, just an ugly sinner, saved by grace. I know, with full confidence that the Holy Spirit resides in me, and chastises me when I’m out of the will of God. And when I share beloved holiday traditions with my little ones, I’m not filled with dread, guilt, or doubt (because those are emotions the enemy brings). On the contrary, I’m completely overcome with love and joy that often spills down my cheeks in tears. It’s a beautiful thing!

If Jesus himself were to step foot in my home during any holiday celebration, especially His birthday, I’m quite certain He’d smile at all the pomp and circumstance surrounding it! That feeling of comfort when thinking “what would Jesus do” tells me all I need to know.

My home will be filled with traditions, with the magic of childhood (which I’m thankful to be experiencing a second time, through the eyes of my own babies), with joyful hearts, and with the Gospel. And for none of that am I ashamed!

Playing Catch Up-Where Have I Been?!

10/07/2013 12:19:00 PM Posted by mommy2twincesses

Wow! It’s been 5 months since my last post….really?! Maybe you’ve wondered where I’ve been, but probably you didn’t realize I was even gone, but that’s okay.  In limbo; that’s where I’ve been.  Should I continue to blog or should I stop? It took 5 long months to figure out the answer to that question-and here I am.

My last post was an internal debate over the educational future of my twins. To home school, private school (not that we have any viable options in that arena), or to public school-that was the current hot topic. After much soul searching, praying, and just pondering in general, we decided to give public school a shot!

I have to admit, I was so torn that I actually acquired a home school kindergarten curriculum “just in case” as well as enrolled them in public school. I thought this way I’d be good to go no matter what we ultimately decided ;) (Yes, I was a Girl Scout, and yes, one of my many mottos is “always be prepared”.)

With the girls in school, and loving it, I now have a few minutes here and there to spare and writing is what I love, so I kind of think it’s only fair to myself to go for it. So here I am, going for it!

Now how to catch up on all that’s went on in 5 months?!

IDK, but I’m going to try!

Confessions of a Mommy Blogger-Letter of Truth

9/15/2012 09:57:00 AM Posted by mommy2twincesses

Though I’ve been blogging now for quite some time (in the 2-3 year range, I’m doing good to remember what happened yesterday, so forgive my vagueness), my basic reasoning behind the madness has shifted, and I feel I must confess a simple truth to those of you kind enough to read my ramblings.
When I first started blogging I did so for a multitude of reasons, one of which was for monetary compensation. Since the initial gig has ran dry I’ve found myself in quite the predicament; though I no longer was getting paid to blog, I still WANTED to-thus, I began here on Blogger.com with a personal blog for nothing other than my personal drive to share way too much information.
My point in confessing is this-I don’t blog everyday (and we all know that seems to be a cardinal rule in the blogosphere), I don’t post about nonsense, and basically, if I’m sharing something on here, it’s because I found whatever it is so compelling I simply couldn’t keep it bottled inside.
*deep sigh of relief*
Thank you for letting me get that off my chest! Thank you for continuing to read though I don’t “play by rules”!
I don’t have time to waste chatting away about things that simply don’t matter, to share countless (and most of the time seemingly useless) coupons and give-aways, and I know that you don’t have time to waste clicking through to those things.
So here’s to us! The over-sharers, the party planners, the last minute supper fixers, the overzealous parents who feel the need to document our lives for fear of one day forgetting that it was the little things that brought us the most joy, and of course, the exclusive members of the “Parents of Multiples” club!
I vow to not waste your time, not only because I don’t have time of my own to waste, but because I honestly just don’t see the point! Subscribe with confidence that there will be no “junk” posts here-because I just love us that much :o)

Becoming a Butterfly-Bring it on 30

7/29/2012 03:55:00 PM Posted by mommy2twincesses

As the milestone birthday of 30 years creeps closer and closer to becoming my reality, I’m strangely growing more and more comfortable with the idea! It wasn’t long ago that I was, quite honestly, in freak-out mode about leaving my 20’s behind.
I had made long to-do lists in my mind and for some strange reason felt like I should have everything lined out and perfect by what once felt like “dooms day”.
But now, with the big day less than a month away, I’m feeling much more at peace……and little even, *gulp*, (should I say it?!) excited!
I had plans of working out like a crazy person to reclaim the body that I had before bringing my precious daughters into the world. After chasing that fantasy half-heartedly at best, I actually saw a nutritionist who gave me a healthy and utterly satisfying dose of reality. Instead of the 20-30 pounds that I “thought” I needed to shed, she advised that 10 be an absolute maximum, if I lost any at all. She helped me see that at this stage in life, it should be more about being healthy and generally comfortable in my own skin, and not dependant on the scale’s read out.
After letting the “10 pounds max” sink in, I’ve felt better about myself than I have in years! Screw the BMI charts! They’ve warped our minds! I’m almost 30, NOT 13! I have the body of a mother, one who amazingly created two humans at once, and yet it still functions just fine and leaves my hubby grinning like a school boy ;o) What more could I want?!
Bring it on 30! I’m ready for you! I’ve lived, I’ve learned, and I’m more beautiful and whole by the day! Every single time I belly laugh with my loved ones those fine lines may get a little deeper, but it’s just another stroke of good fortune in my opinion.
So here it is world! The fresh and proud face of (almost) 30!

Becoming a Butterfly-By Age 30

4/18/2012 03:58:00 PM Posted by mommy2twincesses

As I’ve begun this Proverbs 31 Woman journey I have felt constant nagging in my heart to set an “end” date. Okay, not necessarily and END, but a point to shoot for having the majority of tasks accomplished. With a milestone birthday looming over my head I figure that is as good a place as any to set my goal.
Drum roll please! By my 30th birthday I plan to have the vast majority of this Proverbs 31 Woman figured out and set in place in my life. After all, 30 feels so “grown up” and I still feel so “not”. I’m pretty sure 30 years is plenty enough time to figure out who you are in life and just to have your “stuff” together. Well, as I’ve been taking inventory it turns out I don’t have it together and I WANT to by 30! I know that’s pushing it time wise, but I’m determined and my mama has always said how hard headed I am. Perhaps I’ll put my stubbornness to work and get things lined up!
Let’s see, it’s just about 4 months until my birthday. That doesn’t sound like long, especially since Sara Horn gave herself an entire year. *shakes head* No! I’m not going to let something as silly as fear of failure stop me from trying! I WILL be “together” by the big 3-0!
In a previous post I mentioned that a friend contacted me and that her message was a “starting” point for me. I seriously can’t thank her enough, because although we’ve only met for lunch since then, as well as text, I have felt a million times better about, well, everything! Just knowing that she is there, on my side, and willing to help push, change, and just support me means the world! For real lady, I love you! (And I’m looking forward to our play date later!)
That little nudge was exactly what I needed to get my ball rolling!
With the girls at “school” today I had a chance to just enjoy some peace and quiet. I broke out my bible, my “Reflecting His Glory” study book, a notepad and pen, and set to work. Through prayer, reading, and journaling I found so much confidence in the days to come!
I’m a big time multi-tasker, so please, try to bear with me here as I find it almost impossible to do just one thing at a time. Here’s how I’m tackling the task at hand as of today:
1.    To begin to better “reflect his glory”, I am continuing the study by Andrea Lenon. I will use this time to read my bible and pray. I aim to do this first thing in the morning as this seems to be the calmest time at our house as everyone is just waking up, and I think there is basically no better way to start the day than with some guidance from the Man ;)
2.    To start being “the best wife ever” I’m reading “The Love Dare”. It’s only one very short section per day, for forty days, so this isn’t all that time consuming but it has already brought a spark back to our eyes!
3.    Being the best mom ever is a tough cookie to crack because this is seriously a day by day task. I have found though that the basic concepts from “The Love Dare” are pretty easily applied to children too, so I’ve kind of been using that as my guide.
4.    The home issue is really taking off and I think it will be a HUGE burden lifted when it is finally complete! In the notebook I carry around with me I’ve listed each and every room in the house and what I hope to accomplish in there. Whether it be cleaning, organization, decoration, or whatever, just having my goals down in writing make it seem so doable! I plan on going room by room until my entire house is “done”. Day before yesterday I tackled the laundry room and finished it. DH (darling husband) could hardly believe his eyes!
5.    And the whole getting back in shape thing?! Well, I’ve decided that by my birthday I want to be able to wear a sleeveless shirt without fear (or jiggles). I ran today and did a few weight reps. My goal is to be active at least 30 minutes a day, every single day.
6.    And though I had forgotten about submitting my article, my writing career got a tiny jolt yesterday as I received an email stating that it was ready for viewing in the Spring Edition of Multiplicity Magazine! Baby steps………slow and steady win the race………..
There you have it! That’s where I stand as of now. I did a lot of rambling and I apologize, I’m just so excited! If you have any tips or suggestions to help reach goals like these or if you are on a journey of your own, share it with me! Let’s cheer each other on!

Becoming a Butterfly-First Steps &WLWW Link-Up

4/11/2012 08:24:00 AM Posted by mommy2twincesses

I’ve always heard it said that just starting something new is often the hardest part. I am living testament to the truth of that statement! I always find myself feeling dread over the silliest things, but instead of admitting it and facing it head on, I shove it to the back corners of my mind and pretend that all is well. However, more often than not I quickly find that my negative nelliness was all for naught and whatever it was that I was dreading wasn’t actually all that bad. In fact, 90% of the time I actually end up enjoying myself in whatever the situation.
This new Proverbs 31 Woman challenge that I’ve set up myself up for is proving to be just the same. I know that I want to change, but just the thought of beginning has me all a mess. Here I sit with a laundry list of things that I know I need to fix, but where do I even start?!
When I realize that I can’t answer a question on my own (which is next to never) I turn to prayer, just as I know deep down I always should. And just as our amazing heavenly father always does, he listened and pointed me in the right direction.
#6 on my list is to be a better friend. I honestly didn’t even consider starting here on my own, but just as I was listening and looking for an answer, my phone buzzed showing a new text message. I checked it and almost couldn’t believe my eyes! A very dear friend who through kids, jobs, and just life in general had drifted away was texting me because she read my post and wants to reconnect and find herself with me! What an awesome God we serve!
Although I will admit that I had to look up the exact verse to be sure I got it right, Ecclesiastes 4:9 immediately came to mind, “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.” (NLT)
This makes perfect sense! I fail at so many things because I go at them alone. We aren’t meant to single handedly tackle the world! We need a partner, friend, and confidant to keep us on the right path, to cheer us on when we’re feeling defeated, and to just be there with us through the trenches.
Thank you friend, for being there for me and I’ll see you in a bit for lunch :o)
Life’s paths take us all in many different directions, but if you’re flying solo out there, consider finding a wing man. Because all great super heroes come in pairs-Batman and Robin, Bert and Ernie, Millie and Vanillie :o)

Becoming a Butterfly-Admitting my Faults

4/09/2012 07:49:00 AM Posted by mommy2twincesses

I have a sneaking suspicion that my never-satisfied-with-myself tendencies have to do with simply being a woman. It is becoming clearer to me by the day that certain attributes of females were intentionally placed within us by our creator, but unfortunately for me, he hasn’t zapped the wisdom I need to grasp all of this, what it means, nor how to arrive a place of self acceptance into my brain as of yet. And, instead of sitting here moping about and just waiting for his divine intervention, I’m going to start making more of an effort to become who I want to be-and hopefully who God intends for me to be.
I suppose the first logical step is to decidedly point out what it is that I want to change and/or be. This is not going to be easy, as I’m sure my laundry list is pitifully long and I’m almost certain I’ll forget something. Oh well, I’ve got to start somewhere!
Upon discovering that the Good Morning Girls summer study is going to cover Courtney Joseph’s, of Women Living Well Ministry:  The Proverbs 31 Woman-One Virtue at a Time, I simply couldn’t wait and actually began reading Sara Horn’s “My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife”.
Yes! I am THAT kind of student. The one who has to prepare and read everything I can before the actual lesson so I know I’m getting all out of it that I can. Dorky, I know ;)
Anyway, this book has been perfect for me since I’m constantly feeling lead to improve as a woman. I want to be the Proverbs 31 woman, wife, mother, and friend! But boy am I seeing what a long way I have to go :/
So, back to this “list” of mine……I have a feeling that I’ll quickly discover that my list was a complete waste of time, but I feel like I have to do it anyway, so here it goes.
I want to:
1.       Be more Godly. I want to “Reflect His Glory” like Andrea Lennon tried to teach me through her study. I want to make a difference for Christ in our church, in our community, and in the world.
2.       Be the best wife ever! Seriously, I want to knock my husband’s socks off each and every day. I want him to wake up thinking that he HAS to be the luckiest man on earth to have married such an awesome chick as me ;)
3.       Be the best mom ever! I want my children to “rise up and call me blessed” like the Bible says is ideal in Proverbs 31:28. I want to raise beautifully healthy, respectful, intelligent, well rounded, God-fearing children. I want our days to be filled with sunshine, giggles, and memories of blissful picture perfect moments!
4.       Be in the best shape ever! According to Romans 12:1, taking care of our body is a “spiritual act of worship” and since having my now 3 year old identical twin girls I’ve been slacking. It’s time to get things back under control there. After all, this is only body I’ll ever have and I know that as a Christian I’m sharing it with Jesus since he lives within me…….that is a TALL order to fill!
5.       Have a peaceful, beautiful, and organized home. I’m doing pretty good with this one, but as always, there is room for improvement.
6.       Be a better friend. This will also have to include finding friends worth having. I mean, I have great friends, but not necessarily the kind that I want walking around in my heart and that I trust with anything. In fact, if I’m to be honest, and well, since I’m basically writing to myself, I must be…….I don’t really have friends like that right now. There is a cousin of mine who fits into this category, but life and circumstances seem to driving that apart as well.
7.       Have a writing career. I have no clue where to start, but I’ve been blogging over on WhattoExpect.com for pay, so that counts for something, right?!
I’m sure I am leaving something out, but this is a start. I feel exhausted already. Pray for me-and while you’re at it, stop by my Facebook fan page and leave words of encouragement and/or follow me on Twitter!

Confessions of a Mommy Blogger-Piling it On

1/15/2012 05:26:00 PM Posted by mommy2twincesses

I can tell that this “confession” thing is going to be pretty easy for me to keep up! LOL, I ALWAYS have something to confess ;)
Despite the vast majority of days ending with a game of “That’s not my Name” I have made a couple of moves to pile a little more responsibility on my plate.
Before I go on, I have to confess what “That’s not my Name” is. *hangs head*
When a day has been entirely too long or flat too tiring, I find myself responding to calls of, “Mommy!” with a chorus from the “Ting Tings”, “that’s not my name!” The first couple of times I pulled this stunt they literally froze and stared at me like I had just sprouted a third eye. And then eventually shouted, “Yes it is Mommy!”
They’ve gotten much better at our little game. Almost 3 year olds are more clever than most people give them credit for. Now when I whip out, “that’s not my name”, they are quick to quip, “well, Nic Nic (in a very sarcastic tone) we want blah, blah, blah.”
Despite the craziness, I’m actually really excited about my new ventures. See, I’ve found that for me to be a truly happy mommy I have to feel like I’m part of something bigger. Something just for me, something I enjoy, and that gets me away to a private “all big girl” land for at least a little while.
Bunco is great, but is only one night a month and really doesn’t take any preparations. Christmas Cantata is PERFECT, once weekly, requires work at home, but unfortunately only lasts a couple of months.
Yesterday after briefly flipping through my “All You” magazine and ripping out the coupons I wanted I spied a small write up about a stay at home mom who “mystery shops”. That’s always sounded so intriguing to me, almost “too good to be true”. She quoted the site she signed up at as freelancebyu.com. She saw it on the Today show, signed up, and is actually getting jobs! If she can do it, so can I. I just have my fingers crossed that even Po-Dunk southern towns need mystery shoppers :/ Oh well if not, I can at least say I tried. And, the best part is that it gives me a reason to check my email! LMBO, I’m HORRIBLE about checking my email…….
And then, this afternoon I attended a meeting at church about revamping our next to nonexistent Sunday School program! There were 8 of us there and we’re going to give “rotations” a go, so that no one person bears all of the responsibility or misses all the services. This is something I’ve dreamed about for as long as I’ve been classified an “adult”. It’s weekly, it takes planning and preparation (both of which I feign for), and best of all, it’s sharing God’s word! I’m. Super. Stoked!
With things to look forward to this twin mommy can endure almost anything! Bring it on world! I feel important again…………for now :o)

Confessions of a Mommy Blogger-Clearing the Air

1/13/2012 06:53:00 PM Posted by mommy2twincesses

I’ve been having a hard time fulfilling the commitments I’ve imposed on myself as a mommy blogger.
There just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day nor discipline in my body.
That’s where this idea stems from. I’m a journaling kind of girl and finally realized that, “Hey, this is my blog! I can journal/vent/confess here if I want to”. So, that’s just what I plan to do.  I’m not perfect, in fact on most any given day I would bet my left big toe that I’m borderline insane. And I’m sure that for anyone who regularly partakes in the mommy blogger madness, it will be a breath of fresh air to get some reality checks.
I mean, yes, we do crafts and I home make this and that, and we go here and there, and our lives are pretty swell, but to leave out all the “behind the scenes action” just no longer seems fair.
So here I go, clearing the air!
This stay at home mom stuff is freakin’ hard! For me, it’s more mentally so than anything. The majority of my conversations are with preschoolers therefore I’m going to assume that is the reason my brain normally struggles to function at bare minimum on a preschool level.
Just a couple of days ago I spent from the time we got up (5:45am-ish) until noon (when we finally busted camp and left the house) being “baby cat”. My almost 3 year old twin girls were my “mommy cats” and we spoke this entire time in “meows”. It started out pretty entertaining and suddenly went to seriously alarming that we were having full blown conversations, and clearly understanding each other, with just body language and meows. I really wish I were making this up :/
Then, on days like today, I’m so exhausted by the time supper is on the table that I literally go hide out in my bathroom. My excuse is always “number 2”, and while I usually do save it up until then, I constantly look for new inventive ways to milk it for every second I can. I can’t believe my husband hasn’t forced me to go to the doctor to find out why it takes so long for such a normal bodily function to occur :oP  Truth is I sit there, all alone, in (almost) perfect silence, listening to the “fart sniffer” muffle out distant cries of “Mommy, where are you?! You don’t need your privacy!” I open the second drawer of a little corner shelf and grab the magazine on top and browse through as much as I can manage.
This magazine browsing is actually a pretty useful way to pass the time as I actually pull out articles that I want to file away for later use in a folder I’ve created for this purpose.
Don’t judge me. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do ;)
This actually feels nice-to just clear the air, let it all hang out, and to flat tell it like it is. I could get used to this (and hopefully will).
